What It Takes to Become a High Fashion Model

As you page through the latest fashion magazines, have you ever wondered who those girls are and how they got there? Well surprisingly, there are many different ways to become a high fashion model. Some girls, like the famous Brazilian super model Gisele Bundchen, were just discovered in a grocery store by an agent or photographer. Others start with small agencies in their hometowns, and then transfer to big cities. Many take the plunge and move to a more appropriate market, and find a modeling agency when they arrive. All of these girls have a couple of things in common. First, they meet the physical requirement to become a high fashion model in the chosen market with a particular agency.

If your interested in becoming a high fashion model, you may be one of the tallest and slimmest people you know. High fashion models are unusually tall and thin. This look is favored by designers for the way the clothing hangs on the body…5’9” is typically the minimum height. There are some exceptions, but usually those exceptions occur with models who are already established and have been working for a while.

Next, take a look at your measurements. Get some tailors tape and measure your bust, hips, and waist. For bust you can use your bra size. For high fashion models, this can range anywhere from a 31A to a 36C. Waist measurements are typically 23” to 24”, and hips, 33” – 35”.

If you’ve got the look, the next step is the skill. Successful high fashion models have a knack for portraying a character in a photo, without looking as if it takes any effort, all the while making the clothes look fabulous. You want to tell a story with the photo. There has to be substance behind those eyes; something special and alluring that makes people want to be the model in those clothes. How do you achieve this? Well some girls just do it naturally, and others need practice. The more you are in front of the camera, the more you learn about which poses and expressions work for you. Practice makes perfect. You can practice using your computer camera, or have a friend take some photos of you for practice sake. Often times, you will find a photographer who wants the same kind of practice, and you can work together for a common goal. Look at other high fashion models. There are many poses that are very common. Practice in high heels, practice in swim suits and dresses. Think about different scenarios when you’re having your photo taken.

Being a high fashion model is a unique business. You have to have a very open schedule as well. Castings and photo shoots are usually last minute and can happen any time of day or night. Some may last a week. Like any business, you need to be professional and ready when the time comes to get ahead. Take good care of yourself – high fashion modeling is the most strict when it comes to hair, skin and body requirements.
