A Few Steps To Becoming A Model

Want to know HOW TO BECOME A MODEL?  Here are some first steps!

What does it take to become a model? Most people think that in order to become a model you need to look like one of the “Victoria’s Secret” girls. This is not the case. Many models and modeling agencies will tell you the key to becoming a model is to have desire, perseverance and self confidence. Really tough skin would help as well. Believing in who you are and knowing your potential is half the battle. Then, you will want to decide what area of modeling best suits you as an individual.

The opportunities to become a model are vast. Normally, one tends to think of the runway model or the model in the swimsuit. Models are needed in every area you can imagine. Some are hand models, catalogue models, runway models, promo models and many more. A good place to start would be to look at the different types of models and what the requirements are for each one. Generally they will have height and weight stipulations. Keep in mind these are also guidelines, and may have a bit of leeway depending on the genre. You will then want to look at preparing a portfolio for yourself.

If you have not worked before, agencies do not expect you to have an extensive portfolio. Generally, all you will need is one good clear head shot and a good full body shot with very flattering tasteful attire. This will be enough for the agency to see if they are interested in working with you. Once you start working, you can then build up your portfolio, until such time the two pictures on your comp card are all you need. Do keep in mind a legitimate agency will never ask you for upfront fees or dues. If this is the case, find another agency.

Finding the right agency is important. There are many out there, and your job is to find the one that best suits your needs and you feel comfortable with. You want to find the right one that will help you to become a model. Take some time to check the credentials of each one you are interested in, and narrow it down to 2 or 3. Then, set up an appointment with each one and go from there. You have your portfolio and self confidence, so you are ready. Interview the agency, and ask the questions that are important to you. Be true to yourself, and they will respect that. It’s so vital to remember that almost anyone can be a model, yet not every modeling job is suited for everyone. This is where the thick skin comes into play. Never take it personally if you don’t get a job; there will be a modeling position out there, and with perseverance, you will find it.
