Getting started in modeling is both fun and challenging. Yes, it looks glamorous and the models in magazines certainly make it look easy, but getting your foot in the door at a modeling agency definitely requires some hard work and a little bit of finesse.
One of the many problems you’ll experience with modeling agencies is the amount of competition you will have to compete against in order to get signed or land any of the available jobs. There are many people vying to succeed in the fashion industry, and believe it or not, you probably have some look-alikes. To stand out, you will need to set yourself apart from everyone else.
First, be prepared. Make a portfolio with your resume and photos. Make sure the photos are a good representation of what you look like now, not what you looked like 10 years ago. One of a modeling agency director’s pet peeves is to receive a portfolio, bring the girl in for an interview with high hopes, only to discover that she’s had 4 kids since then and looks completely different than she did in her photos. Your portfolio is your resume, so only include the last couple of year’s best work. This is a representation of what the client can expect when calling you in for a go-see (casting) or direct booking.
Don’t fool yourself and don’t let your modeling agency lose trust in you; this won’t get you any jobs. If you’re older now or plumper, you need to represent that. Don’t worry that this will shut the door on any modeling possibilities for you. There is a need for every body type and age in modeling. Different customers have different needs for whatever ad they’re shooting.
Once you have your portfolio updated with at least one headshot and one full body shot (usually in a bathing suit or tight dress), you will be getting calls from the modeling agencies who are interested. The most important things to remember are punctuality and being available. If you want to stand out of the crowd, show up on time, every time. In fact, show up 5 minutes early and be prepared for your interview.
Bring a notebook and take notes of what the modeling director tells you. This shows that you are motivated and confident that you will get the job, but also that you are eager to learn what they have to teach you.
Now, if you make the right first impression, you will start to receive calls for jobs. Remember, you’ll need to be completely available for last minute castings. The model that is available the most will get more jobs. The modeling agency won’t waste its time on people who don’t answer their phones, don’t call back, or are never free to do a shoot. Always let your agency know when you will be out of town. This is a sign of respect, because they don’t want to look like a fool if they are submitting you for jobs that you will not be available to work.
Modeling agencies sometimes work a model on a job-to-job basis, but if you prove to be talented, reliable, smart, and motivated, you may have the opportunity to be signed as one of their top models with regular shoots and jobs.
