So You Want To Be A Runway Model- Things You Should Know!

Elite Models

What could be more fun? Strutting down a runway in the most amazing fashions, photographers flashing their cameras, fashionistas “oohing” and “ahhing” about how fabulous you look. It is fun! Do you think you have what it takes? Let’s discuss the few important factors involved with having a career as a runway model. It is a very specific job that has strict requirements. If you have the opportunity to work in this field, you should. It’s not something you can do forever.

To be a runway model, you have to be at least 5’8” and have a slim build. Check out the fashion shows on television or online. You will see that all the girls have a similar build; tall and slender, not too curvy, a walking hanger if you will. The fashion industry loves this look and has for years. It helps the clothing become the main focus. If you fit these requirements, read on.

You have to be able to walk. I know this sound obvious, but designers like a specific kind of walk. Also, you have to be able to walk with confidence and strength in high heels, sometimes very high heels. Watch how the successful girls walk; nothing over the top, simple, straight, and subtly sexy with attitude. Every show will suggest a different attitude. So, in a sense, you will be acting. One designer may tell you to be a goddess, the most beautiful, richest woman in the world and you look down on everyone. Another designer may tell you to be a playful flirty girl on the beach in the summertime. I’ve even heard, “be an outrageous party girl who rode in a motorcycle and just had three shots of tequila.” Regardless of the attitude, you need to have great posture and a great walk. Try videotaping yourself walking, and work on trying to fit into the different shows you watch on YouTube.

Being a runway model is very competitive, so working on your walk is important. Also taking care of your skin, hair, and body is important. Be sure to keep your complexion nice by washing your face twice a day. Keep your hair trimmed and free of split ends. Also keep your body slim and toned. You never know when you might get an audition for a swimsuit runway show. While small imperfections can be overlooked, you want to look fantastic in a bikini.

Be professional. Show up on time to your casting. If you book the job, get there 15 minutes early. Be friendly. People will remember you. You will work with many people at the runway show, including hair stylists, make-up artists, assistants, designers, and more. Listen to what they have to say. You are all coming together to create a show. Be part of the team. The show itself will be a frenzy. You will usually wear multiple outfits, so after your first walk, you rush backstage and have several people help you change out of your current look and into the next one. There can be anywhere from 10 – 40 models in one show, all changing and running around.

The compensation for working as a runway model ranges from free clothes (which a newer designer may offer) to up to $20,000 for the top runway models during New York fashion week. Your agent will negotiate your fees based on your demand.
